Sony has announced Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial war film depicting the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, titled Zero Dark Thirty, for Blu-Ray in March. The film stars Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Jason Clarke and Mark Strong.
Coming hot off of The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow set out to make a film depicting the never-ending hunt for one of the world’s most wanted men, Osama Bin Laden. Everyone was patiently awaiting to see what Bigelow would come up with and the result is that of a stirring drama that shows us the cause and effect of the war on terror.
Many have highlighted the film’s use of torture and while it plays a big role in the finding of Bin Laden, I must say Bigelow handled it very respectively, only showing how it was used as a key factor in our hunt for the man. Not once does the film glorify or look upon it in a positive or negative light. It simply presents the facts.
The rest of the film can be described as an air-tight political drama that is harnessed by Jessica Chastain’s rock-solid performance, plus a dozen or so supporting players that turn in anywhere from extremely impressive, to slightly distracting performances.
On the whole Zero Dark Thirty works tremendously well and is one of the best films of 2012 by a landslide. I sure hope it gets the proper Oscar attention it deserves come this Sunday.
Our very own Jonathan Lack had this to say about the film in his review:
Zero Dark Thirty is as smart and well crafted a drama as any made this year, a stark and harrowing peek behind the modern intelligence curtain that is both exhilarating and refreshing in its focus, clarity, and execution.
The film will come with the following bonus material:
- No Small Feat – Making Zero Dark Thirty
- The Compound – Tour the film’s rebuilt compound
- Geared Up – Watch the cast train with authentic SEAL gear
- Targeting Jessica Chastain – A look at the role of Maya
Zero Dark Thirty will hit shelves on March 19th, 2013.
