Lionsgate has announced the Blu-Ray release of Scott Derrickson‘s latest horror flick Sinister for February. The film was co-written by C. Robert Cargill, produced by Jason Blum and stars Ethan Hawke and James Ransone.
Wide release R-rated horror is mostly dead and gone. It pains me to say it, but the only R-rated horror material that ever seems to get any attention are those awful Paranormal Activity films. This simply means that when something of good quality comes out we need to get behind it even more. Derrickson’s Sinister is that bone-chilling horror movie that actually scares you and rarely insults your intelligence.
It’s a literal found-footage film and yet it never falls into the traps set up by the subgenre. It’s creepy and bloody and relies on its build-up and tension to give you true horror. I was more than impressed with the film and part of me wants to say former critic-turned-writer C. Robert Cargill had a heavy hand in that, with a script that felt fully aware of what worked and didn’t work in the horror genre.
Our very own Christian Law had this to say about the film in his review:
Even though Sinister isn’t the scariest of them all, it manages to do what any great horror film should aspire to do: leave audiences disturbed. There are scenes in this film that I will never forget (one in particular involves a lawn mower), as they did more than spray blood on the camera. Films such as Sinister create hope for this generation of horror, as it proves that there is still originality and, more importantly, scares left to be had. This movie will leave you with your jaw dropped and your dreams haunted.
The film comes to Blu-Ray with the following bonus material:
- Audio commentary with director Scott Derrickson
- Audio commentary with writers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill
- “Living in a House of Death” featurette
- “True Crime Authors” featurette
- Deleted scenes with optional audio commentary with director Scott Derrickson
Sinister comes to Blu-Ray on February 19th, 2013.
