Universal will be bringing RZA‘s directorial debut The Man With The Iron Fists to Blu-Ray in February. The film stars RZA, plus Dave Bautista and Russell Crowe.

Musicians turned actors isn’t that big of a deal, but when they try to become screenwriters and directors is when I naturally become curious. RZA has made some great music, but can he direct a full-length feature? Well, not really.

The Man With The Iron Fists tries extremely hard to be a homage to some martial arts classics, but where it works with its visual flare it slacks with trying to have a competent story and proper structuring. The film feels incredibly long and almost completely dull at times, while we wait for RZA to surprise us with some kung fu action.

I wasn’t expecting the next best martial arts epic, but something a little more clear-cut wouldn’t have hurt. Still, the film shows us that RZA has an eye for filming, he just needs a few more shots at perfecting a script and perhaps getting some advice on structuring a film without too much fat.

Our very own Ben Kenber had this to say about the film in his review:

It may have been too much to expect this to be like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but it could have passed as a B-movie version of Kill Bill. It doesn’t however, but here’s hoping that RZA makes more movies because he certainly has the passion for it, and things can only get better for him as a filmmaker from here.

The film will be coming to Blu-Ray with the following confirmed special features:

  • Unrated Version of the film
  • Deleted Scenes (30:00 min)
  • A Path to the East (2:30 min)
  • A Look Inside The Man with the Iron Fists (2:00 min)
  • On the Set with RZA (5:00 min)
  • UltraViolet

The Man With The Iron Fists hits stores on February 12th, 2013.
