Remember when everyone was talking about Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, the film that was scripted by one of the finest living American novelists and starred a cadre of exceptional actors? Remember how disappointed people were when the film did not follow through on its promise? If you were one of those who expected more from the team of Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy, you’re about to have a chance to see The Counselor as it was meant to be seen, with all the scenes that were edited out of the theatrical release.
20th Century Fox recently announced that an unrated and extended cut of The Counselor will come to Blu-Ray in February. This surprises no one, as I do not think there’s a Ridley Scott film that doesn’t receive a director’s cut. What makes this one intriguing is that there were hefty cuts made to Cormac McCarthy’s original script, which those in the know think may have damaged the film. It will be interesting to see what makes it into the extended cut, and whether or not it improves the overall quality of the film.
The Counselor follows the story of a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) who gets involved with a drug deal for some quick cash. Things do not go so well, and he has to face down the likes of Brad Pitt and a crazed Javier Bardem. There’s been no real indication as to what will be edited back into the film, but I suppose we can expect more development of Cameron Diaz’s character, a bit more craziness from Bardem, and perhaps some of those touted scenes that were cut from McCarthy’s script.
The extended cut of The Counselor will only be available on Blu-Ray, so get out your wallets. The rest of you still dwelling in the dark ages of DVD will have to make do with the theatrical release.
The Counselor will come to Blu-Ray and DVD on February 11, 2014.
