Which ’90s kid has never heard of Sailor Moon? The magical girl classic left a mark on an entire generation and to this day is considered one of the most iconic anime series of all time.

Based on Naoko Takeuchi’s manga of the same name, Sailor Moon released five seasons and three animated movies between 1992 and 1997. While there’s very little hardcore fans would change about it, there’s something that might put off some folks — the amount of filler content.

In its 200-episode run, the classic Sailor Moon series aired 98 filler episodes, meaning that almost half of the anime is original content. Whether you’re looking to rewatch the series or ready to dive into it for the very first time, it’s worth keeping in mind that filler episodes are not considered required. Yes, they can be thoroughly enjoyable, especially for first-timers, but you won’t miss out on anything important to the story’s overall plot.

A good option for those who wish to skip all filler content would be to watch the anime’s 2014 reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal. Across its three seasons, there are no filler episodes, making it a fast-paced and more faithful adaptation of the manga. Despite its nice visuals, though, the remake doesn’t quite manage to grasp the charm of the 1992 version, which leads many to prefer the classic. If you’re one of those people, you’ve come to the right place.
