We found out last week that Professor Gellar has been dead this whole time and Travis has been acting alone in the Doomsday Killer murder sprees. Dexter now knows what the plan is and this week, he sets out to capture Travis. The only catch is that Dex must keep hidden from Miami Metro the fact that Travis is the only killer out there. He wants Travis all to his own and even though the serial killer is currently the most wanted criminal, Dexter will do anything to capture him for himself.
Aside from his focus on Travis, Dexter is now beginning to see that religion is not the way for him to go. Even though he tried listening to the advice that Brother Sam gave him, he’s starting to realize how phony the whole belief is. It’s really starting to show and I’m wondering if we’re going to see the darker side of Dexter again once he totally abandons religion.
Elsewhere on this week’s episode, Travis finally comes to terms the fact that he killed Gellar a few years prior. Travis is also the one who posts from Gellar’s blog. When perusing through the various comments that have been left by the faithful followers, Travis finds someone he can take in to be his accomplice in finishing what God wants them to finish. His name is Steve Dorsey and Travis recruits him to finish off the one who got away.
Meanwhile, Miami Metro finds Travis’ hideout and begins to investigate the scene. While doing so, Deb has a panic attack brought on by memories of attending funerals at churches. At least that’s what her therapist tells her. Deb is also still working on the dead call girl case, even though LaGuerta frowns upon her doing so. When Deb finds out that it was Matthews who killed her, she is taken aback and immediately calls Dexter about the situation.
I was a bit underwhelmed by the fact that the story involving Louis holding the hand to the Ice Truck Killer case was not talked about more in this episode. I’m wondering if he’s going to be someone who will pick up in the next season or if the writers will just bring him up and then rush him out in the final two episodes of this season.
I did find it funny when Dexter disowned the idea of Louis’ game. Even though it was based around homicide, the game let the player choose to be a serial killer. Dexter was appalled by the game and told Louis he should scrap it and work on something else. This leaves Louis to blow off Jamie for their date night.
Elsewhere, Quinn’s drunken antics were a bit out of hand in this episode. The first time we see him, he’s passed out in his car, feet out the window and beer bottles on the ground. It was in broad daylight and not a single person called the cops.
Despite the flaws, this was actually a very strong episode of Dexter. We’re starting to see that he’s not much for religion and there may be a possibility he’ll be going more toward the darker route of his ways. I didn’t really like how he just gave up and called the police, though. That can almost be a dead giveaway that he was there and might know some things that Metro doesn’t.
Either way, it’s coming down to the wire, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
