The recent Spider-Man: Far From Home subjected both Peter Parker and the audience to a series of escalating twists and fake-outs, and arguably the film’s biggest reveal was saved for after the credits had finished rolling.
We are, of course, referring to the bombshell that Nick Fury and Maria Hill had actually been Skrulls for the entirety of Peter’s latest solo outing. Director Jon Watts recently clarified that this post-credits twist was included as a means of explaining how the famously cynical Fury could be completely fooled by Mysterio’s superhero act, but all things considered, the sequence feels more like a tease of future Marvel movies than a continuation of Far From Home’s story.
In a newly published interview with Variety, however, co-writer Chris McKenna claimed that the team initially considered involving the shape-shifting alien race in Peter’s clash with Quentin Beck:
“It’s funny, there was a very, very early iteration of the Mysterio story that actually did involve the Skrulls that we kicked to the curb early in the story-writing process.”
Though the details of these early plans remain unclear, you can imagine that the famously deceptive Skrull species would’ve had much to discuss with the master of illusion.
McKenna went on to explain how Far From Home’s final twist tied in with the themes of the film as a whole:
“Because this really became a con artist movie, essentially, we really went along with how many ways can we deceive the audience? How many twists and turns can we have? It seemed like it was an idea that Jon Watts had kicked around early on that we embraced as something people would love to have. There’s always one final twist, and we would be living up to what we were trying to emulate and celebrate.”
The post-credits sequence of Spider-Man: Far From Home left audiences with plenty of questions. For one thing, many viewers are now wondering which other MCU characters might secretly be Skrulls in disguise. What’s more, the question remains of what exactly the real Nick Fury was doing in outer space. With almost a year to wait until Phase 4 gets going, fans have plenty of time to form their theories, but first, here’s hoping that Marvel can offer some clues at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con.
