Attention all horror fans! If you’re in the mood to celebrate a summer full of screams, Amazon Prime has you covered. The streaming service is adding a ton of genre movies to its selection this month, including supernatural superhero flicks, time traveling psychological thrillers and renowned occult classics.
Below, we take a look at some of the more high profile horror features coming soon to a streaming box near you:
Hellboy (July 23)
Don’t say we didn’t warn you. This year’s much-maligned Hellboy reboot is headed directly to Amazon Prime, less than three months after it unceremoniously left theaters. Maybe streaming from your living room, surrounded by a bunch of friends with a couple of beers in hand is the best possible way to view this. Besides, it’ll be a nice primer on the character before Netflix reboots the series a third time in the near future.
My Bloody Valentine (July 31)
Having just left Netflix last month, anybody who wanted to catch this remake of the 1981 classic seemed out of luck. Thankfully, Amazon Prime announced that it was bringing the Jensen Ackles star vehicle to its streaming service, though it sadly won’t feature the 3D gimmick that the movie was released with in theaters. You can still watch with glee though as The Miner heaves a pickaxe directly at the camera, even if it does lack stereoscopic depth.
Jeepers Creepers 2 (July 31)
Executively produced Francis Ford Coppola, the second movie in the Jeepers Creepers trilogy is probably best known now for breaking the record for the highest ever Labor Day weekend at the time of its release. That’s pretty impressive when you consider that it’s over 100 minutes of a high school basketball team stuck on a broken down bus in the middle of nowhere. Of course, it turns into a pretty solid creature feature when the Creeper actually shows up, but the scares are far and few between.
Twelve Monkeys (July 31)
Okay, this one’s admittedly a bit of a cheat considering Terry Gilliam’s 1995 masterpiece is more a sci-fi noir than an actual horror film. Yet, by its very nature, this post-apocalyptic epic examines the darkest corners of memory, time, and perception, all leading up to a considerably haunting conclusion. Come for the hard genre tropes, stay to see why this Brad Pitt performance was nominated for an Academy Award.
Rosemary’s Baby (July 31)
A seminal work of horror cinema, this 1968 Mia Farrow vehicle finds a pregnant woman defending herself from an evil cult that she suspects is planning to steal her unborn baby. In the process, the film examines such complicated themes as religion, the occult, paranoia, and even the liberation of women. Having been directed by Roman Polanski, Rosemary’s Baby is one of those rare movies that have been able to withstand the not-so-nice reputation of the person who helmed it.
