As you likely recall, having successfully reversed the snap, Captain America travels through time in order to return the Infinity Stones. The next time we see him, Chris Evans’ character has aged several decades, but some viewers are still trying to piece together the chain of events that elapsed off-screen.

Has the older Steve been secretly living in the MCU for all this time? Or did he spend his life with Peggy in an alternate reality before hopping back into the main timeline to pass on his shield? Fans continue to debate the subject, and when Evans himself recently spoke at ACE Comic Con Seattle, the star did little to clarify the matter, telling his audience that this was a question best left for the writers.

“You know, I’m not sure I can give you those answers. That’s weak as shit, but ask the writers,” Evans said. “Look, I understand there’s a lot of things you can question about the time continuity but if there’s one thing I’ve learned about working with Marvel, they don’t leave stones unturned. They really don’t.”

Indeed, Avengers: Endgame co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have previously been asked just what happened to Steve, and their explanation is that Cap has, in fact, been living out his retirement in the same timeline as the MCU movies. However, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo have meanwhile offered their own, contradictory explanation, and even Markus and McFeely have admitted that the story is open to interpretation.

In any case, going back to Evans’ recent comments, the actor seems to be suggesting that future Marvel projects might tie up some of the loose ends from Cap’s journey. Maybe so, but in the meantime, the MCU’s Phase 3 comes to a close with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd.
