Sony Says Future Spider-Man Spinoffs Could Take Place In The MCU

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige nearly broke the Internet last week when he teased that a Venom/Spider-Man crossover film would likely happen in the near future. Both fans and critics of last year’s hit Sony movie were trying to make sense of the idea, though. Does Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock already reside in the MCU? Would Tom Holland’s wall-crawler pop into a Venom sequel? Would Sony even want to bring in Holland, or would they distinguish themselves with a new face in the role?

While doing press interviews for Spider-Man: Far From Home, producer Amy Pascal attempted to clear things up, but she may have made the situation even more confusing. While it’s evident that Sony wants their Spider-Man spinoffs to succeed on their own merit, she doesn’t rule out that they could crossover into the MCU somewhere down the line.

At this point in time, Marvel fans shouldn’t be too concerned about seeing Jared Leto’s Morbius or a currently-uncast Black Cat interact with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man anytime soon though. Pascal says that for the time being, Sony is only focused on their upcoming individual films.

“The most important thing is that each of these movies can stand on their own. So I think the first thing for us to think about is: Venom has to stand on its own, Far From Home has to stand on its own, Spider-Verse has to stand on its own. They all have to be great movies themselves. And then the possibilities are endless…

That’s the thing about the Spidey universe. There are so many characters; we haven’t even scratched the surface of it. I’m always getting calls from Dan Slott saying, “But you haven’t done this one yet! You haven’t done that one yet!”

Sony hasn’t had the greatest track record when it comes to developing solo Spider-Man movies and spinoffs in the past, so it’s promising to see that they’re trying to put the properties themselves first instead of immediately chasing after the quickest buck. Who knows what’s being discussed behind the scenes at the two studios, but Pascal’s comments seem to imply that they have much larger plans once Venom 2, Morbius, and their other future films get off the ground.

While Venom wasn’t the critical hit that fans have come to expect from Marvel Studios, the movie made a serious dent at the box office, and its ridiculous tone took the Internet by storm. While at one point it seemed impossible for Tom Hardy and his alien symbiote to pop up in the MCU, Kevin Fiege now seems optimistic it could happen. Of course, this is all up to Sony, but with next month’s Far From Home introducing Holland’s Spider-Man to the multiverse, the possibilities for interconnecting the two cinematic universes truly does feel, as Pascal says, “endless.”
