Since hitting theaters over four years ago, the newly rebooted Jurassic World series has made a meteor-sized dent in the box office. So obviously, it should come as no surprise that Netflix has revealed that a new animated spinoff show is set to reach your TV screen next year. In fact, the only surprising thing about this announcement is the fact that after 25+ years of dinosaur mayhem, why did it take so long in the first place?
Produced by DreamWorks Animation, the long-rumored series will be called Camp Cretaceous, an admittedly cute stab at wordplay. Set shortly after the Chris Pratt-starring 2015 film, but long before the island is destroyed by a volcanic eruption (as seen in last year’s Fallen Kingdom), the story will focus on a group of six teenagers stranded on Isla Nublar after the dinosaurs escape and wreak havoc across the park. As its title suggests, the show will be family-friendly, targeting those too young for the carnage featured throughout the movies.

A Jurassic Park cartoon was nearly produced sometime in the 1990s to capitalize on the success of the first film but was canceled upon the request of Steven Spielberg. Concept art from the show leaked online shortly before World’s big screen premiere though, depicting the hand-drawn return of Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, Ian Malcolm, John Hammond, and his grandchildren Tim and Lex, as well as dinosaurs never-before-seen on the big screen.
Despite impeding the earlier incarnation, Spielberg will serve as executive producer on Camp Cretaceous, along with Frank Marshall, Colin Trevorrow, Scott Kreamer and Lane Lueras.
