Combining action and adventure with some self-aware role-playing satire, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was, as our very own Matt Donato put it, an energetic expedition into genre-loving wilds. Though it may have taken the easy route with a straightforward narrative, director Jake Kasdan still created a surprisingly smart comedy that resonated with audiences.
Thankfully, we’ll be getting Jumanji 3 later this year, and though the official release date is set for December 13th, stars from the movie took to Instagram early this morning to commemorate the end of shooting.
See for yourself:
At this time, there’s not a whole lot out there about the threequel or its story. However, combined with some previously released on-set photos of a colder environment, these flicks suggest that the scale of this world is going to be much bigger as the actors pose together in the desert.
What we can say with absolute certainty is that Dwayne Johnson and Karen Gillan will be joined by returning cast members Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas, the only one who’s not pictured. With them, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Alex Wolff will also be coming back as the teenagers who discover and get sucked into the Jumanji game, though their arcs seemed to be completed by the end of Welcome to the Jungle.
Jumanji 3 won’t be all returning faces, however, as three big names have already signed onto the project. Ocean’s Eight‘s Awkwafina, It’s Always Sunny‘s Danny DeVito, and Lethal Weapon‘s Danny Glover will all be joining the cast in undisclosed roles. Though we don’t know too much about what Sony’s got up their sleeve right now, like we said, the movie’s set to roll into theaters this December, so expect some more answers here soon.
