It’s odd to think that in an early draft of the script for 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the character of Nebula was originally supposed to die. Thanks to subsequent rewrites, however, not only has Karen Gillan’s hero remained in the MCU for several more movies, but she now stands as one of the lucky survivors of the Decimation, and is also expected to be among the key players in next week’s Avengers: Endgame.
Indeed, Nebula has certainly evolved heavily over the years, going from starting off as one of Ronan the Accuser’s goons, to one of the main heroes in the upcoming Infinity War sequel. The latest trailer even had her dressed in the same white uniform as the Phase 1 Avengers, indicating that she’s now officially one of the gang. And while we still don’t know exactly what role she’ll play, Gillan has promised fans that they’re in for a treat.
Speaking to the Toronto Sun in a recent interview, the actress wouldn’t say much about Nebula’s arc in Endgame, but did state that it’ll be the “best superhero movie” ever.
“It’s going to be the best superhero movie of all time,” said Gillan. “Even if you’ve never seen these characters before, it doesn’t matter. You can still jump onboard and you’re going to have a whale of a time.”
That’s a bold statement, but not one that we doubt. After all, there’s never been a superhero film – or even any film, really – with this much hype behind it. And with box office analysts projecting an “unprecedented” opening weekend for Avengers: Endgame, it truly looks as if this might just be “the biggest movie of our lifetime,” as some are calling it.
Circling back to Nebula, though, and we imagine we’ll get to see her face Thanos in the film and likely find a way to externalize the pain he’s brought her for so long. Whether she achieves that by killing him, or just helping the heroes reverse his snap, we don’t know, but we’ll find out soon enough, as Avengers: Endgame opens big next week, on April 26th.
