Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will serve as the Sequel Trilogy’s last chance to pair up Kylo Ren and Rey, but if recent comments from Daisy Ridley are anything to go by, then we wouldn’t count on seeing these two enemies get together.
Speaking to Steele Wars at Star Wars Celebration, the actress was asked if she knew about the fans shipping “Reylo” as a couple, to which she replied:
“I do know about Reylo. I don’t know how I feel about it, because everyone’s talking about the toxic thing thing of a relationship when it’s essentially emotional [abuse]. It’s a tricky road. I do feel like, deep down, Kylo thinks what he’s doing is right and he doesn’t think he’s wrong, but he has also killed so many people. So I can’t really get behind it, no, in a personal way.”
Indeed, given all the awful things that Kylo has done, seeing him pair up with the Sequel Trilogy’s main heroine would give off some pretty creepy vibes, and you can imagine that J.J. Abrams would be wary about sending out the wrong message. That being said, Ridley hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Ben Solo coming back to the light side:
“Well, maybe there’s redemption, who knows? Maybe we explore it in the film.”
For what it’s worth, a so-called “Rendemption” is currently being predicted by quite a few fans. It could even be argued that last week’s title reveal added fuel to the theory, since Kylo is one of the few surviving members of the Skywalker bloodline. Then again, The Rise of Skywalker’s title can certainly be interpreted in other ways, and after Return of the Jedi gave us Darth Vader’s redemption, some filmgoers are hoping that this year’s trilogy-closer will try something different.
Either way, considering how much blood Kylo has on his hands, we wouldn’t bet on Abrams letting him live to see the end of this year’s release. As for Rey, perhaps she’ll find love with a less toxic partner like Finn, but you can imagine there’ll be more urgent matter’s on the young Jedi’s mind when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
