The last time we saw the original Phase 1 line-up for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes all in one place was in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. And as the release of Avengers: Endgame draws closer, it seems that Joss Whedon is feeling a little nostalgic for the old gang.
The writer-director recently took to Twitter to share a 2012 interview with the cast of The Avengers. The post came with a short message that simply read:
“I really miss these clowns.”
While co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo have taken the reins on the Avengers series since last year’s Infinity War, set photos indicate that the upcoming Endgame will revisit the Battle of New York from The Avengers. How exactly this happens is still to be confirmed, but one of the most popular theories about this month’s release is that the MCU’s few surviving heroes will travel back in time in order to reverse last year’s snap.
In any case, according to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, Whedon’s original team from The Avengers will serve as the focus of Endgame. Captain America and Iron Man have been particularly prominent in the movie’s trailers and TV spots, which is only fitting, seeing how both characters are widely predicted to be exiting from the saga after this next film.
In fact, with the exception of Natasha Romanoff, none of the Phase 1 heroes are confirmed to have a place in Marvel’s Phase 4. And seeing how the Black Widow solo movie is heavily rumored to be a prequel, even Scarlett Johansson’s character isn’t necessarily safe. Regardless, we can see the whole gang together at least one more time when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
