Even by the standards of horror remakes, the upcoming Child’s Play has seen an incredible amount of backlash lately, but one development that’s even got some of the critics cautiously excited is the casting of Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.
Indeed, when the actor revealed his involvement in the project over the weekend, the internet went nuts. After all, the Star Wars icon has decades of experience in the voice booth, seeing as how he played the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. And didn’t he do so brilliantly? The voice, the deranged cackle – everything was simply perfect, and we’re feeling fairly confident that Mark Hamill will be able to bring the same level of villainy to the role of Chucky later this year.
But just in case you needed some more convincing, a new promo for the Child’s Play remake has surfaced and it gives us a brief tease of the actor’s laugh for the character. It’s not much, but it’s certainly enough to whet our appetite ahead of the next trailer, which should be here in the next few weeks.
Of course, even the involvement of the legendary Mark Hamill probably won’t be enough for franchise creator Don Mancini to offer his endorsement anytime soon. Having headed up the series for thirty years now, the filmmaker has been pretty vocal about his disapproval of Orion’s decision to reboot the property without his involvement.
Still, Hamill hopping on board is definitely a good sign and he joins an already impressive cast which boasts Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Bateman, who fall prey to the Buddi doll, blissfully unaware of its more sinister nature. Also starring are Beatrice Kitsos of The Exorcist, Ty Consiglio and Brian Tyree Henry.
Child’s Play creeps into theaters June 21st – day and date with Toy Story 4, another very big release in which animated toys come alive and murder all those around them. Wait, that’s not right…
