Fans of The Walking Dead are beginning to digest last night's episode, and suffice to say, they have a few questions going into the season 9 finale.

Last night’s episode of The Walking Dead, “The Calm Before,” turned up the heat with Alpha snatching a number of unsuspecting people from the fair – namely Tara (Alanna Masterson), Enid (Katelyn Nacon), DJ (Matt Mangum), and Henry (Matt Lintz) – and displaying their decapitated heads for all to see.

Even by the show’s own lofty standards, last night’s episode was as brutal as it was horrifying, but it was also a window into the mind of Samantha Morton’s chief Whisperer, who has clearly marked her territory. She’s undoubtedly the big bad of The Walking Dead season 9 – so much so, in fact, that the disheveled Negan may prove to be an unlikely ally as Sunday’s finale approaches.

But one thing’s immediately clear: The Walking Dead fans did not expect such a left-field twist, particularly not in an episode entitled “The Calm Before.” Mind you, this is The Walking Dead we’re talking about, and after almost a decade of zombie-slaying action and major character deaths, we should really know to expect the worst.

And just think: King Ezekiel intended to unite the fractured communities of the Hilltop, the Kingdom, and Alexandria. Let’s just say he’ll have a thirst for revenge once all is revealed. And our money’s on Daryl besting Beta (Ryan Hurst) once and for all. Round two, anyone?

Per AMC, here’s the synopsis for the finale:

In the aftermath of an overwhelming loss, the communities must brave a ferocious blizzard; as one group deals with an enemy from within, another is forced to make a life or death decision.

Look for The Walking Dead season 9 to reach its conclusion this Sunday, March 31st, with “The Storm.”
