With the launch of Disney Plus later this year, Marvel Studios will be able to explore new creative avenues that go well beyond the content of the films. But while many of their planned TV shows will still follow the continuity of the MCU, Slash Film is reporting of an animated series that will prove to be a major exception.
The site claims to have heard from three separate sources that Marvel Studios is producing a show based on the What If comics. For those who don’t know, the What If series launched in February 1977 and has since accumulated almost 200 issues, all of which offer canon-breaking storylines based around hypothetical questions. Such loopy scenarios explored include “What if Thanos joined the Avengers?,” “What if Professor X had become Juggernaut?” and “What if Iron Man was trapped in the time of King Arthur?”
The TV show will reportedly be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, and may bring in some of the MCU’s biggest stars to reprise their roles for some voice acting. While most of the “What if?” scenarios explored by the series have yet to be revealed, Slash Film relays word that one episode will be an adaptation of Vol.1 #47 of the comics, which answers the question, “What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?”
Speaking of Loki, the God of Mischief’s standalone series remains the only Marvel show that Disney has officially announced for their upcoming streaming service, though it’s already known that Scarlet Witch and Vision will be pairing up for their own project, as will Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Beyond that, we’ll probably have to wait at least until after Avengers: Endgame comes out next month before Marvel Studios offers any further details.
