Sherlock Creators Provide An Update On The Future Of The Show

Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have provided a brief but promising update on the status of the show and if we'll see another season.

Long before he suited up as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Benedict Cumberbatch was busy solving puzzles and cracking cases as Sherlock Holmes, the iconic detective featured in the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The BBC show based on the character, simply titled Sherlock, ran for four seasons – so far, at least – and has been widely praised by fans and critics alike. As such, everyone’s holding out hope that Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman will return at some point for a fifth outing.

If you’ve been keeping up, though, you’ll know that there’s been a lot of back-and-forth (and some heated controversy) about where things will go from here and to date, we still don’t really have a concrete answer yet on whether or not we’ll be getting another season. But it seems we shouldn’t give up hope just yet, as co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have now given us a promising update.

Speaking to Radio Times, the former insisted that: “We’ve never necessarily said goodbye to Sherlock. No, we’ll see!” Gatiss, meanwhile, chimed in and said: “One thing at a time. [Our new show] Dracula occupies a lot of headspace.”

While it’s true that Dracula is no doubt taking up a lot of the pair’s time right now, it’s nice to hear that Moffat is still remaining positive. Then again, he’s always been optimistic about another season, unlike some of the show’s stars.

Benedict Cumberbatch has stated he’ll “never say never,” but has also admitted that he’s not thinking about it right now as he’s far too busy with other projects. Dr. Watson himself, Martin Freeman, on the other hand, is perhaps the least hopeful when it comes to a potential season 5, saying in the past that he believes it might be time for Sherlock to come to an end.

Still, with Moffat always remaining positive and now giving us yet another encouraging update, we’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed for some sort of Sherlock reunion in the next few years.
