As the star and title character of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Margot Robbie’s future in the DCEU is secure for at least the next year or so, but according to a new rumor shared to a Harley Quinn fan site, the Clown Princess of Crime could be a no-show in the upcoming Suicide Squad 2.
Other than the fact that James Gunn is writing the script, little is known for sure about follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad, but there’s been plenty of speculation and hearsay about the project, with some saying that the film may serve as a soft reboot for the series. But whatever Gunn’s intentions are for the property, the recent report alleges that Robbie won’t be reprising her role for the movie, while also hinting that the previously planned Harley and Joker pic won’t be happening, either.
So far, we’ve yet to see any evidence for these claims, but given the mixed response received by the first Suicide Squad, it’s easy to imagine Gunn wanting to make a fresh start with this next film, which could mean bringing in a new line-up. What’s more, in light of the tense history between Gunn and Jared Leto, some have speculated that the Joker may not be returning for Suicide Squad 2. This arguably leaves less of a place in the sequel for the villain’s longtime partner, though it’s also worth noting that Warner Bros. is seemingly keen to establish Harley as a character in her own right, beyond her connection to the Joker.
All in all, things are looking rather hazy, and it could be some wait before we get any clarification on the Suicide Squad 2 situation. In the meantime though, you can catch Harley once more when Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7th, 2020.
