Despite Thanos currently being cock of the walk on the live action side of things, the Mad Titan hasn’t had as much luck in the comic book realm as of late. Long story short, Requiem, formerly Gamora, beheaded her father and now the universe is one purple despot lighter.
As one would expect, there’s a power vacuum of sorts being left behind, and it appears as though the House of Ideas won’t wait much longer before filling the void. In fact, the soon-to-be relaunched Guardians of the Galaxy series looks to be the book to watch if you want to keep up with this situation.
We say that because Marvel Comics have now dropped their March 2019 solicitations online, and the one corresponding to Guardians of the Galaxy #3 warns of “a new Thanos rising.” Like many of you, I’m left simultaneously intrigued and perplexed.
Perhaps series writer Donny Cates can shed some light on the subject though:
“Geoff and I have some INSANE plans for our first Guardians arc. This arc is called ‘Endgame,’ and as seen in Thanos Legacy, it begins with the reading of Thanos’s last will and testament. An artifact that Thanos’s brother Eros dug out of his late brother’s heart, which very well may spell doom for the entire universe.”
Though it’s entirely possible that Cates just named Thanos’ successor right there, we can’t be too sure until the issue hits stands. I find it kind of odd that someone else take on the “Thanos” name, but there is a lot of cred that comes along with it. Whether or not the succession proves literal or symbolic remains to be seen.
