The return of Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War was the kind of fan-pleasing twist that you’d normally expect to be reserved for the most out-there of forum theories, but now that Johann Schmidt has joined the likes of Thanos and Loki as one of the rare MCU villains to last beyond a single movie, the question is raised of whether this comeback might continue in next year’s Avengers 4.
Of course, seeing how actor Ross Marquand managed to keep a secret as big as his role in the Russo Brothers’ last film under wraps, it only figures that he’d have the restraint to keep mum about any future MCU appearances, or lack thereof. And so when The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman asked the star in a recent episode of Talking Dead whether he’d be in the Infinity War sequel, Marquand was careful to give the writer nothing.
“I don’t know,” Marquand stated. “I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know.”
Earlier this month, Sebastian Stan made the same questionable claim that he doesn’t actually know if he’ll be appearing in Avengers 4, since the film and its predecessor were shot at the same time. But while there’s a chance that Marquand is legitimately uncertain about whether he’ll have any screen time in the final cut of next year’s release, the more likely story here is that he’s simply refusing to tell, which raises the question of whether he does indeed have something to hide.
Either way, Avengers 4 is already looking to be packed full of familiar figures, among whom are likely to be a few more characters that most of us had assumed to be out of the franchise for good. It’s the end of an era for the MCU, and we’ll find out who’s been brought in to see out the grand finale when the film hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
