One of those is Chris Pratt, who features in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The man who brings Peter Quill to life shared a photo of himself smiling with Lee from when they got to meet, an occasion that the actor referenced in his accompanying tweet, voicing that he was “extraordinarily lucky” to have encountered the beloved comic book creator and been a part of the Marvel world.

Though Lee didn’t create Pratt’s character Star-Lord – who’s from the mind of Steve Englehart and Steve Gan – he did conceive of the initial 1969 version of the Guardians alongside Roy Thomas and Arnold Drake. James Gunn’s 2014 movie and its 2017 sequel felt very indebted to the cheeky irreverence that Stan brought to his characters and comics in the 1960s as well. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 even repaid him by featuring perhaps his most mind-blowing cameo of the lot – revealing that all of his Marvel characters were one and the same, an agent of the alien Watchers.

As production on the next three MCU movies has already wrapped, we’re pretty sure that we have a few more of Stan’s fan favorite cameos to come next year. Namely, one for Captain Marvel, Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home. And if that last one turns out to be his final Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance, it’ll be fitting that it comes in a film that stars his most famous creation.

Rest in peace, Stan Lee.
