It seems as if Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, the magical sequel coming to us from Warner Bros. and director David Yates, is about to have a solid, though not spectacular debut.
As we reported earlier this week, the fantastical adventure is said to be tracking for a $65M-$75M opening on home turf, which would put it on par with the first Fantastic Beasts movie – itself the lowest three-day debut in Warner’s beloved franchise. Which is to say that all Harry Potter pics performed better during their opening weekends.
Be that as it may, excitement for The Crimes of Grindelwald is still pretty high, with wizards and muggles alike recently flocking to Entertainment Weekly to catch the latest high-res photos (and cast interviews!) for the November tentpole. And now, it seems that a lucky few have had the chance to see the sequel early and they can’t stop gushing about it.
Below you’ll find just a sampling of what folks are saying on Twitter, with almost everyone praising the magical adventure that awaits us in just a few weeks’ time.
Fantastic Beasts and The Crimes of Grindelwald is a magical must-see! It builds upon the original & is sure to delight Harry Potter fans. Remarkable visuals, engaging story, & an ending that will leave you speechless. Johnny Depp as Grindelwald is perfection. #CrimesOfGrindewald pic.twitter.com/A0LOjUc6Nn

The first film had a great charm and a terrific villain played by Colin Farrell. In CRIMES OF GRINDLEWALD, Johnny Depp pales in comparison, reaffirming my sour reaction to the ending of its predecessor. #FantasticBeasts

If you’ve been keeping up, you’ll know that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald has had a rough ride to cinemas. Many were upset to see that the villainous Grindelwald would indeed be played by alleged wife-beater Johnny Depp, while the film also suffered accusations of racism for making one of its few non-white cast members an evil snake woman. As such, it’s great to hear that it’s been able to overcome all that and we can only hope that the rest of the world feels the same way as those who had the chance to catch the sequel early.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald opens in North America on November 16th, and with another three films coming down the pipeline – most of which will also feature Johnny Depp’s brooding dark wizard – there’s clearly a lot of this story left to be told, so stay tuned.
