Here’s one from the archives: Reddit has uncovered an old Iron Man featurette designed to showcase Robert Downey Jr.’s first costume fitting as ol’ Shellhead.
The video dates back to 2007, during which time Jon Favreau was still in the process of launching his standalone superhero adventure and the Avengers Initiative was but a pipe dream kicking around in the head of Nick Fury. And Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, of course.
As you can see from the video below, Favreau was heavily involved in every step of the actual design, and helped polish and fine-tune Tony Stark’s super-suit all throughout production – even up to the moment when it was unveiled to the cast and crew, before Marvel’s stuntmen began to familiarize themselves with the various nuts and bolts.
It’s a real gem from the MCU archives, so if you have 10 minutes to spare, pop the kettle on and get ready to relive Tony Stark’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Oh, how far we’ve come. By 2018, Stark is now one of the few heroes still standing after Avengers: Infinity War, and is expected to mount some form of counter-attack against Thanos in order to save his fallen allies from the brink of death. Chances are they’re trapped in the Quantum Realm (or some other Marvel netherworld), meaning Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will need to harness the power of the Infinity Gauntlet in order to undo Thanos’ mass extinction event.
“The truth is… I am Iron Man.” Look for RDJ’s superhero to take flight once more when Avengers 4 steamrolls into theaters next summer, by which point we should have a pretty clear understanding of Joe and Anthony Russo’s master plan and what it means for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No pressure, then.
