While the next Halloween (releasing October 19th) is on track to make a lot of money and is currently awash in solid reviews to recharge the series, this could change. Once again, the people behind a sound film are predictably greedy and eyeing too much of a good thing. At least, Jason Blum is.
Apparently, the horror film mega-producer recently told Entertainment Weekly that he hopes to develop more installments in the Halloween franchise assuming the next one’s a hit. For the 49-year-old, the matter isn’t a question for him if there’s success in this upcoming effort.
“Yeah, for sure, for sure, 100 percent,” he said.
So, where do I begin with this? Well, for starters, the endless extension of brands is everything which is wrong with the film, television, music and entertainment industries today. A story can’t simply be good enough with just one shot now, there has to be games, cereal, musical tie-ins, crossover television shows/films/games, etc. Where does it end? I mean, has no one ever heard of the law of diminishing returns?
I certainly have. Every time you continue on with a property past its natural ending, the quality suffers and taints the overall item. There’s the original Halloween series, Scream, Friday the 13th, Halo, Gears of War, I could go on and on. Also, don’t buy the bullshit about “finding ways to continue the story.” These people don’t care about this. Instead, it’s the pursuit of money which is most paramount for Blum and his ilk.
Need some more evidence of this? Here’s what he once said about the Paranormal Activity series.
“Let me tell you, if we got six movies out of Paranormal Activity — they found new footage five times in a row! — I feel like we can figure out the next chapter. But we’ll see.”
If what you find is crap, don’t bother with it. Don’t bother at all.
