Lars Von Trier is one of the world’s most controversial directors. This became even more evident after Von Trier’s shocking press conference at the Cannes Film Festival in May. On top of this and Von Trier’s generally outlandish body of work, it was announced that the title of von Trier’s next film would be, The Nymphomaniac. Now we know that a constant collaborator with Von Trier may be joining the project.
When recently speaking to E!, Stellan Skarsgård spoke about possibly joining The Nymphomaniac, saying Von Trier contacted him saying “Stellan, my next film will be a porno film, and I want you to play the lead in it.”
Von Trier tends to work with the same actors multiple times, so the possibility of Skarsgård joining the project is not unusual, however it will be very interesting to see who is cast as the female lead which has been described as “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50.”
It would be very risky for any actor to associate themselves with a film that the director describes as a porno film. However, Von Trier has a huge cult following, and there are many actors that would jump at the prospect of working with the Danish director.
It would not be a stretch to see Charlotte Gainsbourg in the title role, as she not only fits the approximate age description, but has worked with Von Trier twice now, first on the 2009 film Antichrist, which is recognised as one of the world’s most controversial films, and then on his latest film Melancholia, but only time will tell who is cast in project.
The Nymphomaniac is scheduled for a Summer 2012 shoot, with a 2013 release. Von Trier’s next film Melancholia, which won Kirsten Dunst the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, is out November 11.
