Though I didn’t detest 2011’s Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds as some others may have, I found that it ultimately fell short of what animated offerings such as First Flight and Emerald Knights achieved. That said, I remain optimistic for the long-gestating Green Lantern Corps.
After what seemed like an eternity of nothing more than rumors to go off of, news broke last month that former DC President-turned-full-time-movie-and-TV-producer Geoff Johns is actually penning the screenplay for the flick. To the uninitiated, this doesn’t sound like much of a big deal. But when you factor in how this scribe with the Midas touch wrote what was arguably the best Green Lantern comic book run ever (spanning nine years, no less), well, then you’d assume we’re in for one hell of a treat.
Reaffirming my faith is what Johns had to say while speaking with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend:
“It’s a complete re-imagining, just like I did in Green Lantern Rebirth with the comics. Hopefully I’m going to be delivering a script that Warner (Brothers) loves and the DC likes, and that they want to make. It’s going to celebrate the mythology and reinvent it in a different way, but also if you’ve read my Green Lantern run it’s very much inline with some stuff we did in there.”
From that, we can deduce Geoff will put a new spin on things, but it’s fun to imagine, say, the likes of the Red Lanterns serving as the antagonists. Since the studio likely wants to distance themselves from Martin Campbell’s picture, odds are we likely won’t ever see the fall of Sinestro on film – and that’s a damn shame. Still, this project couldn’t be in more capable hands.
Stay tuned because the next few months will likely play host to more interesting info concerning Green Lantern Corps. Hey, we can’t guarantee an appearance to be made by Atrocitus, but my gut tells me that Hal Jordan, John Stewart and the other ringslingers to be featured will have their hands full.
