In the five years since Man of Steel was first released to a divided response, things haven’t quite gone as planned for the DCEU, leaving the cinematic universe in a strange and uncertain position. Despite the involvement of Superman and Batman, recent projects like Justice League have failed to make devoted fans out of either critics or the public, suggesting that the franchise’s future may instead lie with relative newcomers of live-action cinema like Wonder Woman and Aquaman.
This raises the question of whether we’ll get another chance to revisit Clark Kent’s section of the universe anytime soon, and while Man of Steel 2 remains an ongoing possibility, Laurence Fishburne seems as unsure about what’s happening as we are. The actor who played Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has evidently heard the talk about the DCEU’s troubled state but has no updates to give about a potential Man of Steel sequel just yet.
“I haven’t heard anything about it. They just fell behind the eight-ball. I really wish they had started 20 years ago. But that’s all right, they’re where they are.”
When it comes to popular franchises, Fishburne has a couple more irons in the fire right now. As well as having a recurring role in the John Wick movies, the actor has entered the MCU via the newly released Ant-Man and the Wasp. It’s a good thing too, since Fishburne isn’t very confident that DC has any intentions of asking him back.
“I don’t think I’m still on call. I was unfortunately unable to go do some work on what turned out to be the Justice League movie. I don’t know that I need to go back or if they’ll have me back or not, but I was grateful to have been a part of it. I loved working with Zack (Snyder), I think he makes an incredible superhero movie. I’m just excited to be a part of this (the MCU) now.”
While Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie recently confirmed that Man of Steel 2 is no longer on his agenda, Hollywood personal trainer Mark Twight reignited rumors of Superman’s return over the weekend with a photo of Henry Cavill seemingly getting into shape for a role. Whether this is a sign of another solo film on the horizon is unclear, but don’t be too surprised if Supes makes an appearance in the upcoming Shazam!, which hits cinemas on April 5th, 2019.
