The post-credit scene has taken on a life of its own ever since the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it’s here to stay.
After 10 years and 19 movies – Avengers: Infinity War included – the MCU is practically synonymous with last-minute zingers designed to tee up the next chapter in Marvel’s blockbuster franchise. Or, in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy, revealing a happy little sapling so that moviegoers leave the theater with a smile on their face.
But the gravitas of Infinity War deserved something a little more understated, and sure enough, Joe and Anthony Russo decided to include a brief nod to Captain Marvel ahead of her own origin story taking flight early next year. It’s no secret that the Russo Brothers almost included Carol Danvers in their superhero smackdown – hell, they even shot numerous scenes of Brie Larson in costume – only to cut the footage at the 11th hour, but thanks to a new Marvel featurette from Art of VFX (h/t Screen Rant), we now have a closer look at Infinity War‘s after-credits stinger.
This is, of course, the intergalactic transmitter used by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury just as he was reduced to ash. Thankfully, he was able to send a last-minute SOS into the cosmos before his untimely death, leaving the door ajar for Captain Marvel to make a big splash during Avengers 4.
As for why they decided to cut Carol Danvers from the picture, Anthony Russo recently told fans the following:
We also wanted to, it was very important to us to commit… we wanted to commit to this ending very hard. We didn’t want to go past the ending very much.
Now that Avengers: Infinity War is doing gangbusters, it won’t be long before Carol Danvers receives her own time in the spotlight. Look for Captain Marvel to carve out a new corner of the MCU on March 8th, 2019.
