Hovering around the 86 percent mark after 80 reviews – so far, at least – Avengers: Infinity War has officially been ‘Certified Fresh’ by the folks over at Rotten Tomatoes.
As promised, the Internet’s favorite movie aggregator posted its score late yesterday evening, just after the review embargo gave way to a sea of positivity. There are one or two criticisms to be found amongst the online consensus, but generally speaking, Infinity War looks to have knocked it out of the park – out of the galaxy – resulting in a “dark, surprising, and often hilarious” expansion of the MCU that is shaping up to be the must-see event movie of 2018.
Here’s the official verdict from Rotten Tomatoes:
Avengers: Infinity War ably juggles a dizzying array of MCU heroes in the fight against their gravest threat yet, and the result is a thrilling, emotionally resonant blockbuster that (mostly) realizes its gargantuan ambitions.
An 86 percent, Infinity War‘s Tomatometer score is still considerably lower than that of Black Panther, given Ryan Coogler’s Afrocentric blockbuster exceeded all expectations on its journey to $1.3 billion worldwide – and a 96 percent RT score.
Elsewhere in the MCU, Thor: Ragnarok performed exceptionally well last November, coming in hot at 92 percent, while Marvel’s previous team-up movies – namely The Avengers and Age of Ultron – notched 92 percent and 75 percent, respectively.
All in all, our own review came in at the lower end of the spectrum, after WGTC’s Matt Donato found that Avengers: Infinity War “cares a bit too much about being ‘Part 1’ and holding enough development for ‘Part 2′, but MCU fans should see their 10-year buildup expectations met – not exceeded, but met.”
That second, conclusive chapter in the Russos’ blockbuster yarn, Avengers 4, will be with us in May of 2019.
