Forget about the mooted ‘Reylo’ romance for a second and ditch any wistful daydreams about Rey winding up with Poe Dameron; in the eyes of John Boyega, the Jakku scavenger will end up falling in love with Finn by the time Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters late next year.
Chatting to /Film, The Last Jedi actor spoke candidly about Finn’s love life – or lack thereof – which looked to have veered into uncharted territory when our former Stormtrooper crossed paths with Rose Tico, the Resistance mechanic who proved indispensable during the mission on Canto Bight.
And while Boyega acknowledges the strong chemistry between Finn and Rose – in fact, the actor believes Finn has a “distinct, unique relationship” with everybody – on a personal level, he’d like to see Finn and Rey wind up together in the so-far untitled Episode IX.
Currently in the midst of press rounds for Pacific Rim: Uprising, the blockbuster sequel in which he plays the untrained son of Stacker Pentecost, here’s what Boyega had to say when asked about Finn’s one true soulmate:
Because Finn is the one character, for me, who has a distinct, unique relationship with everybody. He had this kind of banterous relationship with Han, then he has this loving relationship with Rey. Now with Rose, it feels like he has this great relationship. Personally? Rey. Yeah, Rey.
Failing that, Boyega is quietly rooting for a bigger (and longer!) fight sequence for the Resistance pilot in Star Wars: Episode IX, particularly after The Last Jedi cut that extended duel between his former Stormtrooper and his one true nemesis: Captain Phasma.
That deleted scene, much like the other 13, will be included as part of The Last Jedi‘s Blu-ray launch later this month – March 27th, to be specific. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode IX has been penciled in for December 20th, 2019.
