We’ve got some huge news here today, as Lucasfilm has just announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to be travelling from Winterfell to that galaxy far, far away, as the pair have signed on to produce and write a new series of Star Wars movies. It’s unclear yet if it’ll be a trilogy, but that’s widely assumed to be the case.
Details are scarce at the moment, and understandably so, but from what we understand, these films will be completely separate from both the Skywalker Saga and the new trilogy that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is currently working on. What exactly they’ll revolve around then, or even in what era of the franchise they’ll take place is currently unknown, but expect them to be their own things.
In a press release sent out earlier today, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy expressed her excitement in regards to working with the Game of Thrones duo:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
As for Beinoff and Weiss themselves, they too are thrilled about the opportunity, saying:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
At the moment, the studio hasn’t given us any indication of when we’ll see the pair’s efforts materialize, but with Episode IX still on the way, not to mention an Obi-Wan spinoff and Johnson’s aforementioned trilogy, we imagine it’ll be a while before things get going. Still, this is hugely exciting news and proves that even after the extremely divisive reaction to The Last Jedi, the future of the Star Wars franchise is brighter than ever.
