Thanks to the one-two punch of Wonder Woman and the recently-released (and, sadly, widely-derided) Justice League, Diana of Themyscira is arguably the hero of the hour.

Even if Justice League struggled to leave much of an impression on critics – or the domestic box office, for that matter – Gal Gadot’s Immortal Warrior truly resonated with moviegoers earlier this year, when the Wonder Woman solo outing scored excellent reviews and a whopping $821 million to match.

A sequel was then floated at Warner Bros., though it wasn’t until the studio ponied up and offered writer-director Patty Jenkins a record-setting deal that Wonder Woman 2 was officially green-lit. And so, with Dave Callaham (The Expendables) now on script duties and a late 2019 release date locked in, the heroine’s second big-screen adventure is beginning to fall into place.

From what we understand, the sequel will see “Princess Diana face off against the Soviet Union during the 80s,” which would be a stark departure from the boots-on-the-ground style of filmmaking seen in the first outing, when Gal Gadot’s Amazonian ventured onto the European front – not to mention slogging it through No Man’s Land – in her quest to defeat Ares. But if video editor extraordinaire Alex Luthor had his way, Wonder Woman 2 would be a very different kind of film.

In his fan-made trailer up above, Luthor imagines a sequel which includes both Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, among others, and sees Diana fighting off a Thanagarian invasion. Using numerous clips from both Wonder Woman and Screen Gems’ Legion, among a few other titles, the preview paints a pretty intriguing picture of what an adaptation of the aforementioned comic book event would look like on the big screen and we must say, we’re sold. Judging by what we know of the sequel so far, it doesn’t seem like any of this will play into it, but we imagine that the Thanagarians will certainly start to make their presence felt in the DCEU in no time at all.

June 2018 is the targeted start date for Wonder Woman 2, and as such, we’d expect more to come to light as we head further into the new year – including whether or not Chris Pine will be back as Steve Trevor, the dashing WWI pilot and love interest to Gal Gadot’s Immortal Warrior. Exactly how he could return is another question entirely, but rumors point to him showing up and chances are that Warner will call upon flashback scenes to ensure that Trevor’s tenure in the DC Extended Universe isn’t over just yet.
