Two years ago, Daredevil introduced us to Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk – better known to you, I, and New York’s crime ring as The Kingpin – and Marvel’s roster of small-screen villains hasn’t been the same since.
Sure, Kilgrave (Jessica Jones) had his moments, but there was something so deliciously evil about D’Onofrio’s antagonist that he simply commanded each and every scene. It’s small wonder, then, that Kingpin is considered a fan-favorite among Netflix subscribers, who are now looking forward to the character’s return in Daredevil season 3.
Filming is due to commence in the new year, while Marvel and Netflix also have new instalments of Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist cramming up the pipeline. Expect further details on each street-level hero to emerge in the coming weeks and months, but for Daredevil, concept artist James Holland (via ComicBook.com) has shattered the radio silence with two pieces of concept art depicting a more classic version of Wilson Fisk, replete with an ice-white tuxedo.
If you’re at all familiar with Marvel’s Daredevil series, you’ll know that, in keeping with the show’s emphasis on realism, the Powers That Be favored an understated guise for Kingpin. James Holland, however, has taken the chance to render Wilson Fisk with a dash of purple, which quickly became the character’s signature ensemble soon after his inception in 1967.
If nothing else, it’s an innocent tease of what could have been, but after Vincent D’Onofrio promised a mind-blowing arc for Fisk in Daredevil season 3, we can’t imagine Marvel fans will lose any sleep over Kingpin’s actual appearance – substance over style, and all that.
No word yet on when Daredevil will return, but we’ll be keeping you right up-to-date with Marvel’s portfolio of Netflix series long into the new year.
