Vaughn was chatting on the IGN UK podcast when he explained his thoughts on why he would much rather work within the still-forming DC Extended Universe than the firmly established Marvel Cinematic Universes. As well as revealing that he’s currently in talks with DC over some mystery projects, Vaughn made clear he likes the comfort blanket of working with franchises that are on the ropes over those that are flying high.

“I do love the world of DC, and I’ve been talking to them at the moment about a few things. It’s more fun getting involved with franchises when they’re on the down, because then it’s easier to make a good film. So if I got involved with a few of the superhero films out there that have been disappointing, it’s going to be… if I do OK, it’ll probably be better.”

This thinking definitely gels with Vaughn’s previous comic book movie. When First Class came out, it was the first success the X-Men franchise had had in years, with 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine being torn apart by critics. Likewise, the DCEU is in desperate need of another cast-iron hit after Justice League underperformed.

So, what are the “few things” that Vaughn mentions he’s in talks with DC about at the moment? Well, one of them we know is Man of Steel 2. The director became attached to the project earlier this year and has been open about the fact that he’s in discussions to helm the movie in the past. As for the other topics, we can only guess at this time. After all, at the moment, everything from Flashpoint to Justice League 2 is in need of a director.
