If there’s one thing that defines the Star Wars community, it’s passion.
For more than 40 years, film fans have pored over Lucasfilm’s crown jewel and its extended universe – canon or not – to discuss Falcons, firearms and midi-chlorians, so it should come as no surprise that The Last Jedi has sent the Internet into a collective tailspin.
Since its North American debut on Friday, the Rian Johnson sequel has admittedly endured mixed fortunes, as the online backlash from fans has somewhat tainted The Last Jedi and its staggering box office performance. One thing we can tell you with absolute certainty though is that Star Wars: The Last Jedi left us mulling over a lot of questions – questions that will likely continue to simmer until the release of Episode IX in 2019.
And after touching on Luke Skywalker’s contentious arc, Johnson spoke to Entertainment Weekly about another fan-favorite. Spoilers to follow!
Still with us? As part of EW’s ongoing coverage, the outlet placed a laser focus on Captain Phasma (Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie), who was last seen plummeting into the fiery depths of the Supremacy.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that we’ve seen the last of her – just like The Force Awakens, it seems Johnson and Co. have left the door open for a character they describe to be the Kenny (South Park) of the Star Wars saga. Mark Hamill echoed that sentiment, too, stating:
I think she’s got to survive. She falls through the flames and lands on a big pile of rubbish.
Hamill’s comment was naturally made in jest, but on a more serious note, The Last Jedi‘s costume designer Michael Kaplan noted that, “Gwendoline has it all figured out how she wants to come back.”
Perhaps Episode IX will feature another duel between Finn (AKA FN-2187) and Phasma, then? Time will tell, but for now, the debate surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues to fester.
