What are porgs, exactly?
That’s a very good question. For one, they’re the flightless, bug-eyed avians that are native to Ahch-To, the oceanic planet on which Luke Skywalker first comes into contact with Rey. But are they food, or friends?
It’s a conundrum that has stirred up heated debate within the Star Wars community, and we fully expect that conversation to roll over until The Last Jedi‘s release on December 15th. But as part of its ongoing coverage, Entertainment Weekly has today unveiled the closest thing to a porg investigation as we’re likely to get, and it turns out John Boyega (Finn) isn’t all that fussed on Ahch-To’s furry critters.
I just remember doing some stuff and seeing a lot of porgs around. And they are interesting, but for me, I had a love/hate relationship with them. They’re very, very cute, but when you put them in a bunch, in holes, on the Millennium Falcon, that’s when they start to become really, really freaky.
One porg is cute, then. But a flock of porgs bunched together? That’s a whole different story, as Boyega tells EW:
They’ve got real big eyes, all bunched together. There were, like, little tiny ones and little big ones that would just…yeah, it looks like a rash.
Love them or loathe them, the porgs are set to become a merchandise sensation – if they weren’t already – this holiday season, when Star Wars: The Last Jedi will reportedly rule over the domestic box office with a $200m-plus debut. That’s smack bang in the middle of Rogue One ($155m) and The Force Awakens ($248m), so it’ll be fascinating to see if those early projections are on point.
All that, and much more, will be revealed on December 15th.
