M. Night Shyamalan’s much-anticipated Glass, the sequel to both 2003’s Unbreakable and 2017’s Split, has been in production for about a month now. So far, though, we’ve had next to no glimpses of the movie, which will see Bruce Willis, as the super-powered David Dunn, face James McAvoy’s psychotic collection of personalities known as The Horde. Thanks to these new set photos, though, we now have our first look at Samuel L. Jackson returning as the film’s third main player, the titular Mr. Glass.
The images show Glass AKA Elijah Price looking much like we last saw him fifteen years ago. Though his hair is greying and he’s growing out a beard, the character remains in a wheelchair from the injuries he picked up in Unbreakable. Likewise, his fashion sense hasn’t changed, as he still favours an eccentric long purple overcoat and scarf. Fun fact: purple is Samuel L. Jackson’s favourite colour and he’s managed to work it into many of his movies. For instance, Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber in the Star Wars prequels.
Fans of the cult classic will remember that Elijah Price is a life-long obsessive comic book fan who believes that superheroes – and supervillains – are real. Due to a debilitating condition that left him with incredibly brittle bones, Price was dubbed Mr. Glass by bullies when he was a child. He later embraced this as his supervillain name though when he realized his true destiny: to be the nemesis of the super-strong David Dunn.
The last we saw of Elijah, he was being carted off to an institution for the criminally insane. His role in Glass has been much speculated but these photos seem to confirm that Price will still be hospitalized at the beginning of the film, as they were taken outside Allentown State Hospital in Pennsylvania, which could be doubling as a psychiatric institution.
But will Price ally himself with The Horde so Bruce Willis has two villains against him? Or will Dunn be forced to go to his former enemy for help in defeating McAvoy’s monster? All will be revealed when Glass shatters into cinemas on January 18, 2019.
