We still can’t quite believe the Gambit solo film might actually get made. Channing Tatum was chosen for the role way back in the mid 2000s, but had to duck out of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to appear in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place), with Taylor Kitsch taking the part instead. Which was, at the time, a three-picture deal to play the character.
Well, we all know what happened there. But you can’t keep a good mutant down, with the Gambit project then spending years floating between various directors, with Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman coming very close to actually making it to production. Now, finally, it looks as if Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is to take the reins and finally, finally, get this thing out of the gates.
Just this week, it was announced that Gambit is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day 2019, but we now have an inkling as to the content of the film. This comes courtesy of Omega Underground, who report that it’ll be a “crime/heist” pic. Unfortunately, they didn’t say much more than that, but given the character’s history as a mutant thief, this makes a decent amount of sense and should provide an excellent showcase for his mutant powers.
I’ve always found the superhero ‘genre’ films superior to regular superhero films, with Logan‘s western style, The Dark Knight’s mob thriller vibe and Deadpool‘s fourth wall bustin’ parody to be the source of some of the best comic book movies around. Hopefully, Gambit will join them and Verbinski and Tatum will do the concept of a mutant heist caper the justice it so clearly deserves.
