After two rip-roaring adventures and a box office gross north of $1.5 billion, the Guardians of the Galaxy are very much part of the furniture within Marvel’s ever-evolving cinematic universe. Not bad for a property revolving around one wisecracking space raccoon and a talking tree.
And so, after conquering the globe (galaxy?), James Gunn’s spacefaring A-holes are officially on hiatus until the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – Infinity War notwithstanding. Word is Marvel has quietly reserved a 2020 launch window for Star-Lord and the gang, which would align with Gunn’s current trajectory of one Guardians film every three years.
But until that day arrives, we can at least take solace in one thing: renown concept artist Andy Park continues to pump out alternate designs for some of the Guardians, after his latest piece introduced a more comics-faithful rendition of Zoe Saldana’s Gamora. Embedded below, the artwork came in two variants: one with a cape; the other without. And though you’d struggle to find anyone who took issue with James Gunn’s handling of Gamora, this is a delightful alternative to one of Marvel’s fan-favorites.

Those two pictures came bearing the following caption:
This was another early version I concept designed of Gamora on #guardiansofthegalaxyvol2 I was going for stylized warrior but I soon realized that was the wrong direction for the story @jamesgunn had in mind. Was still fun to paint up 🙂 @zoesaldana is always fun to paint!
James Gunn’s Guardians 2 is now available to pick up on Blu-ray and DVD. Its follow-up, one that currently bears the title Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has been tentatively slated for a release in 2020. Assuming that is indeed the case, it’ll be one of three big-name Marvel movies to launch in three years’ time, though it’s unlikely we’ll find out any firm details until the arrival of Avengers: Infinity War on May 4th, 2018.
