THR reports that Johnny Depp‘s production company Infinitum Nihil and GK Films have acquired the rights to The Vault, a sci-fi/horror comic book about sea divers unleashing an ancient evil. The Image comic is written by Sam Sarkar and drawn by Garrie Gastonny, the team behind the supernatural western comic Caliber.

The Vault is a 3-issue mini series that hits stores this week. The story surrounds a group of scientists and treasure-hunting divers off the coast of Nova Scotia who uncover an underwater vault. Inside they find supernatural elements that will change the world forever, including a sarcophagus with cursed remains and an ancient evil.

Depp’s Infinitum Nihil has worked with GK Films before, most recently on Paramount’s quirky animated western Rango. GK has a first-look deal with Nihil, and is currently behind Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo, which is set for release this November 23rd.

Comic book adaptations are all the rage right now, so it’s little surprise to see they’re now being conveniently cranked out by production company execs. That’s right, The Vault scribe Sarkar is also the Director of Development at Depp’s production company Nihil. That being said, the close quarters here of the creative side and the production side of this film project may make for some amazing synergism. We can only wait and see.
