If Avengers: Infinity War stands as the culmination of everything that has come before it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thereby laying the groundwork for an event movie unlike anything we’ve ever seen, the same can be said about Godzilla Vs. Kong. Well, sort of.
With Adam Wingard (The Guest, Death Note) at the helm and a prime 2020 release date in place, there’s a tangible sense of excitement swirling around Legendary and Warner Bros.’ crossover event, as it’ll herald a gladiator match between two of cinema’s time-honored creatures. Of course, thanks to Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla and this year’s Kong: Skull Island, moviegoers have already been acquainted with Gojira and that skyscraping ape, and though many films of this nature usually forget to have any sort of emotional pull to get us invested in the creatures, it sounds like Godzilla vs. Kong won’t be repeating the mistakes of its predecessors.
While chatting to Screen Crush in a recent interview, Wingard assured fans that though there will be a lot of monster brawling in the film, it’s also going to have an emotional drive to it.
“It’s a massive monster brawl movie. There’s lots of monsters going crazy on each other, but at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it. I want you to be emotionally invested in them. I think that’s what’s going to make it really cool.”
That’s certainly encouraging to hear, as like we said above, so many of these monster movies just focus on the spectacle and it’s hard to get invested. Whether the director’s actually able to follow though on this is another matter entirely, but we have no reason to doubt him. After all, Wingard’s done some absolutely terrific work with stuff like The Guest and You’re Next and it’s exciting to see him hop on board a big blockbuster like this.
Following the trail of destruction left by Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla and the Vietnam-set prequel film, Kong: Skull Island, next up for Legendary’s MonsterVerse is the release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters on March 22nd, 2019. Michael Dougherty’s monstrous sequel is set to pit Gojira against three of his most-famous adversaries: Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, which ought to stand him in good stead ahead of that all-important clash in 2020’s Godzilla Vs. Kong.
