It’ll be some time yet before Peter Capaldi delivers his final performance as the iconic Time Lord, but YouTuber Jamietardis has gone ahead and edited a rather wonderful tribute video that compiles all of the Twelfth Doctor’s many highlights – and lowlights, too!
As relayed to us by Radio Times, the four-minute montage is set against Queen’s timeless power ballad, “The Show Must Go On,” and contains footage from Capaldi’s debut as Doctor Who in 2014 right up until the inevitable regeneration. Yes, pardon the pun, but it’s only a matter of time before Capaldi hangs up his hat for good, leaving the door open for Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch) to assume the mantle. Word is that Whittaker’s first season at the forefront of BBC’s hit sci-fi drama will begin late next year, long after the actress has been unveiled in the 2017 Christmas Special.
And if today’s fan-made tribute video wasn’t enough to tug at the heartstrings, Peter Capaldi spoke to press just recently about the “beautiful” and “emotional” finale that awaits his outgoing Time Lord. Following three years of highs and lows – more highs than lows, mind you, – Capaldi’s casting did draw the ire of some fans when it was first announced. The same can be said about the announcement of Whittaker, though series showrunner Steven Moffat has been quick to downplay any reports of an overwhelming backlash.
And though that may well be the case, there have been one or two members of the Doctor Who alumni who have raised questions marks over the BBC’s decision to recruit the first female Doctor. Thankfully, those narrow-minded criticisms have been few and far between, with the vast majority of Who fans heralding Whittaker’s casting as a progressive step in the right direction.
And that’s something we’ll be able to see unfold in the 2017 Christmas Special. History dictates that that festive bonanza ought to be with us on December 25th, but we’ll be bringing you all the latest on Doctor Who as time wears on.
