With little over a month to go until Wonder Woman‘s theatrical release, Warner Bros. currently has all hands at the pump, rolling out one promo after another for Patty Jenkins’ long-anticipated standalone pic.
The latest media dump hit the interwebs just yesterday, when the studio offered up a fleeting glimpse of David Thewlis as the villainous Ares. But now that the DC Extended Universe is beginning to rapidly expand – carving out room for Nightwing, Batgirl and Gotham City Sirens in the process – the one question that’s been fuelling debate online more recently is whether Wonder Woman will warrant a sequel.
It is, of course, far too soon to gauge the film’s potential success, but that hasn’t stopped Patty Jenkins from dreaming up ideas for a follow-up. Chatting to Toronto Sun (via CBM), the writer-director hinted at the possibility of taking Diana Prince back to the future should Warner Bros. decide to issue the green light on Wonder Woman 2.
I’m excited for her to come to America and become the Wonder Woman we are all familiar with from having grown up around her as an American superhero. I’d like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing. Wonder Woman 1 is so much about her becoming the person she is. I can’t wait to spring forward with who she is and have another great standalone superhero film.
Given the first film is being angled as a bona fide origin story for DC’s Immortal Warrior, the sky’s the limit when it comes to Wonder Woman 2. One potential roadblock, however, is Disney’s long-brewing action-adventure flick Jungle Cruise, after lead star Dwayne Johnson revealed his desire to get Patty Jenkins behind the wheel. Whether the director accepts the open invitation remains a mystery for now, but here, Jenkins gushed about Diana’s impending origin tale.
I always thought the origin story would be the great way to go. I love origin superhero stories and I love the simplicity you can have with that journey. Also, there was the fact that no one had done her story and the fact that I love her. So it was a treasure trove of potential.
Wonder Woman is expected to light up theaters on June 2nd. Can it be the one to course-correct the DC Extended Universe? There’s an air of hushed optimism lingering over Diana Prince’s standalone pic – largely because it is long, long overdue – but ultimately it’ll be those box office figures that have the biggest influence on the possibility of a sequel. Stay tuned for more.
