Following on from the announcement last month that players of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Online will be returning to the land of Morrowind in the MMO’s upcoming expansion, the first gameplay of the substantial add-on has been released, giving us a whistle-stop tour of the high fantasy setting and its inhabitants. The trailer is, predictably, light on story details, but the video description provides a little insight as to why the player has set sail for the island of Vvardenfell.
“You will return to Morrowind and take up arms to save the world from ultimate destruction,” it reads, adding that series fans will likely recognize familiar locations such as Seyda Neen and Vivec City from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Bethesda’s single-player RPG released back in 2002 for the original Xbox and PC. Besides the mushroom-heavy new landmass, the trailer also showcases some of the new armor, weapons and enemies players will find and encounter during their travels, including various new forms of Dwarven machinery not currently present in-game.
Viewers with a keen eye can even catch a glimpse of the new Warden class in action, although it’s relatively brief. From what we know already, Wardens will utilize the powers of earth magic as their main form of attack as well as have the ability to summon a bear companion to aid them in battle. Whether this connection with nature extends to other members of the animal kingdom remains to be seen, but we suspect Bethesda will have more to share over the coming months.
The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind is out June 6 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. In related news, yesterday saw the release of the title’s Homestead update on consoles, which allows players to build, furnish and maintain their own home. See here for more details.
