Turns out Square Enix and Marvel’s seemingly unrelated teasers weren’t so coincidental after all. Bringing an end to fevered speculation, the two companies have confirmed plans to collaborate for The Avengers Project, a game built by Tomb Raider dev Crystal Dynamics that heralds a “multi-year, multi-game partnership” between the two companies.
Developed in tandem with Eidos Montreal – best known for the Deus Ex franchise – further details on both The Avengers Project and new, as-yet-unannounced titles are expected to be released in 2018. There is, however, a rather foreboding trailer to pour over, which finds Earth’s Mightiest Heroes scattered to the wind. Issuing a call to arms, the snippet ends with the message ‘Reassemble’, and fans can at least look forward to the four principal Avengers – namely Iron Man, Cap, Thor and Hulk – featuring in Marvel and Square’s collaboration.
The Avengers Project will also come packing a “completely original” story – not unlike Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man game – and according to the official press release, the upcoming title will lay the foundations to a universe “gamers can play in for years to come.”
A game based on beloved Marvel heroes, The Avengers project is being crafted by Crystal Dynamics – longtime developers of the award winning Tomb Raider series – in collaboration with lauded Deus Ex developer Eidos-Montréal.
The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.
The fact that Crystal Dynamics has been elected at the helm for The Avengers Project certainly explains why Square Enix has handed over the keys to the Tomb Raider franchise to Eidos Montreal. Said to be titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the third installment in Lara Croft’s rebooted origin story is currently without a release window, but stay tuned for more on that one.
Circling back to Marvel, no further details were disclosed, and given The Avengers Project is said to be a working title, there will be plenty of questions asked between now and 2018. Nevertheless, be sure to drop your own early impressions in the usual spot down below.
