Set against a suitably shrill cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” the snippet above introduces us to Claflin’s dashing Englishman Philip, who seeks out his distant cousin Rachel to enact revenge. Those feelings of contempt and loathing soon dissolve before his very eyes when he comes into contact with Rachel Weisz’s titular, alluring lead, sparking a forbidden romance that ruffles feathers all across the West County. Lifting inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name, there’s a touch of Jane Austin to be found in My Cousin Rachel. Couple this with the gothic aesthetic and Michell may well have a sleeper hit on his hands.

Here’s the official logline:

“A dark romance, MY COUSIN RACHEL tells the story of a young Englishman who plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.”

Holliday Grainger, Game of Thrones stalwart Iain Glen and stage actor Simon Russell Beale are also on board, and though My Cousin Rachel is a festival no-show, we’re willing to lend Roger Michell’s new adaptation – one that is totally unrelated to the 1952 version – the benefit of the doubt.

My Cousin Rachel will grace theaters across the UK and States on June 9th and July 14th, respectively.
