Ever since Carrie Fisher tragically passed away last month, fans have speculated as to how Disney and Lucasfilm would proceed with their plans for Star Wars: Episode IX. We know that the actress had finished filming all of her scenes for Episode VIII before her death, but she was set to have a role in the next chapter of the saga as well, and we still don’t know how the filmmakers intend to carry out General Leia Organa’s story arc.
They could, of course, write her out of the franchise in a respectful manner, but there’s also the option to digitally recreate Fisher. Of course, Disney is no stranger to bringing back actors from the dead, as they did the same thing with Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While effects-wise it was damn impressive, it did prove to be quite controversial and doing the same for Fisher would be an equally slippery slope.
So, you can imagine our surprise then when we heard earlier this week that Disney was speaking with the actress’ estate about going the CGI route. Fans, understandably, were quite upset about the news and took to the internet to make their voices heard. Now, in an attempt to put out the fire, Lucasfilm has released a statement telling us that at this time, they have absolutely no plans to digitally recreate Fisher.
We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa. Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.
Of course, the question now becomes how exactly they’ll handle the situation if they won’t be bringing her back using effects. Unfortunately, there’s still no update on that front, but fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that for the time being, at least, there are no plans to bring Fisher to life digitally. In all likelihood, this probably means they’ll be writing her out, but with Episode VIII already having completed filming, that may be easier said than done.
Tell us, what are your thoughts on the matter? Should Leia be written out of the Star Wars saga, or would you be alright with Disney and Lucasfilm bringing her back via CGI? Sound off in the usual place and let us know!
