Stephen Byrne Talks Justice League/Power Rangers #1

Over the past few years, Batman has certainly had some legendary team ups in the realm of comics that miles of red tape would certainly not allow in live action or even animation, for that matter. Having joined forces with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Green Hornet, and the Avengers (the ones from the old TV series, not the Marvel heroes), fans of dream crossovers have had many reasons to celebrate. In a matter of days, that list is set to expand when the Dark Knight and some of his closest allies will meet up with another iconic group in the pages of Justice League/Power Rangers.

Written by Tom Taylor (Injustice: Gods Among Us) and illustrated by Stephen Byrne (Green Arrow), this collaboration between DC Entertainment and BOOM! Studios is nothing short of groundbreaking. Even Byrne himself couldn’t mask his enthusiasm when recently discussing the visual tone with Newsarama:

“Yeah, it’s action-packed. It’s bright and colorful. I tried to use, like, a lot of bright and saturated colors for the Power Rangers, because they’re the sort of beacons of light. And when they first go to the DC Universe, lots of mayhem and explosions and robot dinosaurs – it’s hard not to approach things in a kind of fun, bombastic tone when these are the things you’re drawing. I feel like the writing just dictates having a lot of fun on the page.”

In addition to the those champing at the bit to pick up a copy of the debut issue, Byrne added that this was a dream come true for him as well:

“Yeah, I was a very big Power Rangers fan when I was a kid. I think I was about eight years old when it came out. I had the toys and I was glued to the screen at the time it was on. And actually, when I was that age, I was drawing my own Power Ranger comic – little scribbly, stick-man, pencil drawn things.

“For me, it was my introduction into the world of superheroes and also kind of into the world of comics. I was drawing Power Ranger comics even before I really knew about the world of comics. So it felt very serendipitous when this project came up.”

Justice League/Power Rangers #1 arrives in comic shops this Wednesday, January 11.
